Why is there a Gong in the Church?

Have you ever wondered why many Catholic Churches in Indonesia use gongs during Eucharistic celebrations? 🤔🔔

It turns out that the sound of the gong we often hear during Mass is not just an ordinary musical instrument or merely a cultural decoration! It is a beautiful manifestation of Cultural Inculturation—a harmonious blend of universal Catholic faith with our noble traditions of the Archipelago. 🇮🇩✝️

The heavy and resonant sound of the gong has an important task: to focus all our senses and hearts on the most peak and sacred moments at the altar, namely when:

✨ Epiclesis (1 beat): When the Holy Spirit is called down upon the offering.

✨ Consecration (3 knocks): When the bread and wine are truly changed into the Body and Blood of Christ (Transubstantiation).

Its majestic sound helps create a solemn atmosphere of worship, reminding us to bow and worship the real presence of Jesus.

So, what about the customs in your church? Does your parish use a Gong, small Bells, or perhaps both during the Eucharistic Mass?
