“Empowered Migrant Workers: Their Rights Protected, Their Contributions Recognized, Their Minds Healthy”

Caring for the Soul, Strengthening the Work, Celebrating Dignity

International Migrants’ Day, observed every December 18, is a moment to recognize the dignity, rights, contributions, resilience, and hopes of migrants. For Indonesian domestic migrant workers in Hong Kong, the migration journey includes work, separation from family, cultural adaptation, economic pressure, mental health, faith life, and the need for a safe and supportive community.

Caring Love (PK) - Indonesian Catholic Community in Hong Kong (KKIHK) - Diocesan Commission for Integral Human Development (DCIHD) proposes a series of activities from October to December 2026 with the theme “Empowered Migrant Workers: Their Rights Protected, Their Contributions Recognized, Their Minds Healthy.” This theme positions migrant workers as dignified individuals with a voice, creativity, faith, skills, experience, and the ability to build their community.

With the title of the series “Caring for the Soul, Strengthening the Work, Celebrating Dignity,” the activities are designed as a shared journey: starting from the consolidation of the committee, followed by socialization and Migrant Mass, strengthening mental health through creative activities, collecting participatory photography works, photojournalism training, panel discussions, and culminating in a photo exhibition, bazaar, and performances.

Each stage is interconnected. Faith celebrations strengthen the sense of belonging; training and joint activities open learning spaces; photography gives migrant workers control over their stories; panel discussions expand understanding; while exhibitions, bazaars, and performances present their works and contributions to the public.

This series is expected not to stop as a ceremonial celebration, but to become a space to hear voices, care for mental health, strengthen support networks, develop skills, and celebrate the contributions of migrant workers.

Thus, this commemoration does not stop at a ceremonial event. The activities are expected to become a space to listen, see, dialogue, and acknowledge the experiences of migrant domestic workers.
